Look at My Mouth!

From the day your little one comes home to the day you hear their first word (and beyond!), your child can benefit from daily, face-to-face sound play!

So how do I “play with sounds?"

 This does not have to be complicated. A playful attitude reduces the expectation that they HAVE to imitate. It’s encouraged but not expected. Try blowing raspberries, whispering, talking in a low/high tone, exaggerating m, p, b, and w sounds, babbling, and elongating different vowel sounds!

Why face to face?

 This allows your child to look at your mouth while you are vocalizing and talking. This is just another way they can take in information and feel more comfortable imitating later on. Point to your mouth or bring a toy beside your face to encourage their attention.

Why daily?
 Fitting sound play into your routine allows a dedicated time to devote to speech and language development! More opportunities can lead to increased growth. In that first year of life, you could have 365 sound play moments where your child can be supported in trying out new sounds!

* Pro Tip
 When you play, make sure you:
1. Wait after you take your sound “turn”
2. Look with anticipation at your babe and
3. Reinforce any of their attempts with smiles

What is your child’s favorite sound to play with?
