Today is day 2 of our series highlighting how to embed communication support in your everyday routine. This is all about thinking smarter- not harder. Your child will love it too! The familiar language that you model will help strengthen skills and empower them to participate. You probably target a lot of these skills without thinking about it, but I hope you can feel validated in what you already do and excited about what else to try
Today’s tip is all about bath time! You may not bathe your child every day but it’s a consistent enough activity that a speech routine can be easily created to support communication development. Here are some ways you can sneak language in:
BODY PARTS: This one is a little obvious but I wanted to remind you that it’s totally functional and appropriate to work on during the natural context of bath time! Can they point to their body parts or help you wash the one you name? If that’s too easy- ask them to label what to wash next!
VERBS: As you enjoy bath time label the actions you do or your child does. Splash, wash, dry, scrub, kick, pour, clean, rinse! There are so many to model for your child!
Prepositions: climb IN the tub, pour OUT the water, dip washcloth UNDER water, put shampoo ON your head, wash BEHIND your ears, stand UP, sit DOWN, and more!
Another fun idea is to sing a song (the rubber ducky song is one of our favorites) associated with bath time. You can even make up your own! This helps strengthen the language routine and can be a fun way to enhance social interaction!
