We shouldn’t expect our kids to sprint after taking their first steps, right? The same principal applies to their language development as well as our communication “coaching.”
Children build meaningful vocabulary and imitation skills when we as parents and therapists model one step ahead of their current comfort zone.
So what does that look like? Maybe your child has around 20 single words.. so during bath time he says “belly” and you reply with “wash belly” or “wet belly.” Or during bed time your child requests for her shirt and you say “shirt on” or “red shirt.”
We can meet our children where they are while guiding them to the next step ahead. We can have a plan and feel confident and purposeful with our language modeling.
