Did you know that “non-speech sounds” count as words? Playing with sounds is a great way to work on imitation and initiation skills! Since the purpose of sound play is simply to have fun, the reduced pressure is a sure fire way to get your little one to chime in.
.
Instead of asking them to say the sound, simply model the sound within a play activity! I like breaking down sounds into different categories so I can really target a wide variety:
.
1️⃣ MUSIC: boom, toot, ding, bang, la la la, honk, crash, just to name a few.
.
2️⃣ INTERJECTIONS: think comic books! Wow, yay, boo, uh oh, yum yum, eww! These are great when paired with facial expressions.
.
3️⃣ ANIMALS: cue Old McDonald, hoot hoot, squeak, meow, woof, tweet, sss, rawr!
.
4️⃣ ENVIRONMENTAL: what would you hear in a busy city? Choo choo, vrmm, whoosh, wee ooh, beep, splash!
.
What activity do you like to use to play with sounds?
