Talk in a Box

Is your toddler struggling to produce words? Here’s an easy, low pressure imitation trick! I’ve noticed when adults use play to work on communication skills, kids are more likely to participate! They really benefit from lowered expectations and a silly approach :)

Grab an empty box, bin, or container. Say a target sound or word a few times out of the box so they can see your mouth and then say the sound/word inside the box. The simple echo effect will surprise your child! You can even “ham it up” and have a surprised look on your face. After a few demonstrations, offer your child the box and see if they attempt the word. As always, acknowledge and affirm any attempts at imitation!

The great thing about this activity is it teaches and reinforces the concept of imitation. You can start out with something very simple like “ah” and as your child’s participation increases- you can easily shape the ahh into “ba” or “ma” or “ah-oh”!
