If you are a parent and are concerned (or have been told by your pediatrician) that your child is behind in their communication milestones and needs a speech language evaluation.. you might feel a a wave of complex emotions. Those are normal experiences... And let me reassure you - - -
1️⃣ You did not do anything wrong! You can be an AMAZING “Pinterest parent,” read books to your child everyday + engage with them in play activities... and still have a child who needs speech language support. You are not “less than” and your parenting is not “less than.”
2️⃣ Language skill does not equal value. Your child has amazing thoughts, ideas, and a unique personality to offer the world. A speech language impairment does not stop them from making a difference and reaching their goals. I am a strong advocate for not putting kids in a box due to their current needs!
.
3️⃣ Connection is the goal. We learn to communicate so we can express ourselves to others. As we work on articulation, voice, fluency, and language skills.. connection and expression can be emphasized every step of the way! Perfection is not necessary to have meaningful connection.
4️⃣ Speech therapy is all about equipping and modifying. Equipping your child AND you with tools so you don’t feel powerless outside of therapy sessions. Modifying your child’s environment with subtle tweaks to best set them up for success in everyday situations.
5️⃣ You are still the expert on your child. Regardless of your level of education and experiences with children.. as a parent, you know your child BEST. When a qualified SLP evaluates and finds the right course of treatment, therapy is most successful when carefully crafted with your input and insight!
Parents- y’all are amazing and we SLP’s so appreciate you trusting us with your child’s progress!
