Is Virtual Parent Coaching Right for You?

Let’s start off by doing a little myth-busting. Virtual therapy doesn’t HAVE to involve a child sitting in front of a screen with headphones on (I know this wouldn’t work for my 18 month old). This approach could work for a child who sustains attention to a screen and responds to therapist implemented intervention...HOWEVER, If you are desiring the convenience of virtual therapy (say goodbye to traffic and masks!) but are unsure of how this could benefit your young or very active child.. let me introduce you to the wonderful world of parent coaching!
.
Parent coaching involves the Speech Language Pathologist guiding the parent through implementation of therapeutic techniques during the session. And guess what? Research says not only is this type of intervention effective (Kaiser & Roberts, 2011) - it is also effective when conducted via online training (Douglas, et al., 2020). This is so effective because parents are able to learn and practice using strategies directly with their child. This live time practice increases confidence in using these techniques the rest of the week... which leads to more progress!
