What to do When Your Child Mispronounces a Word

Patterns of sound substitutions and errors are a typical part of development.. and let’s not kid ourselves.. can be pretty cute! But as our children get older we want to foster their speech language development so they can communicate effectively. So what do you do when your child mispronounces a word?
.
1️⃣ Before you even respond, establish eye contact with your child. This ensures they have a direct line of sight to your face and therefore mouth. Viewing the mouth while hearing the corrected sound allows them to receive visual and auditory input!
.
2️⃣ Naturally respond to your child while incorporating the word that was mispronounced in your sentence. Instead of pointing out their mistake to them you are simply modeling the correct pronunciation.
.
3️⃣ Highlight the mispronounced word with your intonation (play around with your pitch, elongation, and volume).
.
4️⃣ Correctly produce and slightly emphasis the sound(s) that were produced incorrectly by your child. Try not to sacrifice naturalness! I recommend elongating the sound by just a split second.
