When I first begin working with a family through virtual parent coaching... I go over specific “sound effects” and words to target based on the activity or toy we are using that day. Slowly over time the parents become more independent in the target selection process. This helps families to feel confident in using our techniques throughout the week.. which ultimately “fast tracks” progress..
So what does the target selection process look like in early language therapy? I like to layer on words.. starting with:
.
1️⃣ A silly SOUND to inspire connection, engagement, and reduce pressure. Boom, wee, uh oh, achoo, zoom, grr.. the possibilities are endless! Try out a variety of sounds and see what makes your kiddo giggle. That’s how you know you’ve got the right sound 😉
.
2️⃣ Next I introduce a versatile VERB! Demonstrate an action while saying the corresponding word. When your child is first learning how to use words, try to model a word that can be used in a variety of contexts instead of a specific verb. Go, see, hear, play, turn, & stop are good “bang for your buck” words.
.
3️⃣ I also like to model location concepts because these can also be embedded in countless contexts. They can be taught during play and then generalized to every day life. My favorites to target are up, down, in, out, on, & off.
